www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 7, 2007 - 43 New Bronte gallery will do more than exhibit art Continued from page 39 ranging from $2.50-$2,500. "I tried to make it so that there's something here for everybody, and all of it is handmade and all of it is beautiful no matter what you choose to spend." She said she has a few paintings done by other artists in the gallery too, and she is looking for one other potter's work to display. When it comes to her paintings, Thompson McNevin works in acrylic and paint figures, which she finds challenging. "I often use paper for texture, I try to use recycled paper.. many of my paintings have many layers of varnish that I paint in between...there are a lot of colours in my painting, that all depends on my mood," she said. Thompson McNevin has painted a number of different images and a series with poppies. This professional artist, singer, mother and wife has been involved in art for most of her life and started singing at a young age. After completing her music studies at Humber, Thompson McNevin performed in Toronto for 10 years. She later went on to study ceramics at Sheridan and got involved in visual arts. Thompson McNevin plans to offer classes in pottery starting in January for people from ages seven and up. "If adults who have taken classes with me, they know how to work the equipment and that type of thing, they can come and take advantage of some unobstructed studio time for a fee." Two teachers from Sheridan have already indicated an interest in working with Thompson McNevin as have others interested in pottery making. She also hopes to start a sewing class without using sewing machines and is considering getting involved in interior decoration. Orange Coloured Sky Gallery and Studio will host birthday parties for kids and fundraising events for charities such as the Sick Kids Foundation, Foster Parent Plan, Amnesty International and the Nicaragua Project, which the artist supports. Thompson McNevin wants to have a foster child through Orange Coloured Sky, noting her family already has one. "I don't want to keep it all here, I want to share it with people who really need some help My son has kidney disease and so he goes to the Hospital for Sick Children and it is such an outstanding hospital...." The artist plans to host, for example, a wine and cheese night and a percentage of the sale will go towards one of the charities. "Different times during the year, we'll have it go towards the different charities." The name Orange Coloured Sky is derived from an old jazz tune. "I have a version by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole...really when I chose that name I liked the visual image it creates, but I also wanted to have something in the name that kind of incorporated my background in music as a jazz singer, so I decided that Orange Coloured Sky would fit that ticket and it would be a great name for a studio, and it would also remind me of where I'm coming from," the owner said with a smile.
