Nearly two meters high and a meter wide, the first of three artworks to hang in a window on Bloor Street in downtown Toronto was officially unveiled earlier this month. Emerald Summer, a woodcut collage dominated by bright greens and blues, has taken over a window of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). "You go to Bloor Street, you'll see it," said a smiling Matsubara, sitting in her Oakville studio. "You can see it from the other side of Bloor Street. That was my intention." Matsubara was commissioned to create the pieces for the window near the Bloor Street entrance to the ROM, a project that took her two years to complete. "I wanted to create something 21st century. You want to create something I can do, my own style, that no one in the world has done," she said. Matsubara was asked to make two pieces, but created three, and donated one to the ROM. A renowned Japanese woodcut artist, she was approached by Dr. Klaas Ruitenbeeck, the ROM's senior curator Louise Hawley Stone Chair of Far Eastern Art, to create art for the window, which until earlier this month held a crystal piece by Michael LeeChin. Matsubara's is the first commissioned artwork to be displayed in the Museum's Bloor Street Plaza. "He told me it was going to be for the public. I felt honoured to be asked," said the artist, who has a long-standing relationship with the ROM, where she has donated nearly 200 of her works. "He didn't tell me anything, what sort of thing I should be doing. He had 100 per cent trust in me." Matsubara laboured in her studio over the course of two years, first starting with a large piece of pine, then mixing in other types of wood to work from.
