Dramatic gold for bantam A Rangers It wasn't quite the Miracle on Ice, but the Oakville bantam A Rangers won gold in their own dramatic fashion recently at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y. SPORTSBRIEFS Jake Cussen scored on an overtime penalty shot to lift the Rangers to a 3-2 win over the St. Clair Shore Saints in the championship game of the Can/Am Challenge Cup. The penalty shot was awarded when St. Clair took a minor penalty while the teams were playing three-on-three. Oakville had lost to the Shore Saints in its first game of the tournament, 6-2, but made its way to the final with wins over the Reading Rockets (6-2), New Canaan Wildcats (4-0) and Greenwich Wings (8-2). Other members of the team are Stefan DiCamillo, Brad Howard, Eric Purcell, Nick Powidajko, Cameron Sayers, Conner Chilton, Ryan Goodhew, Kyle Kokotailo, Kevin Sayers, Cole Munden, Nick Raycroft, Blair Wyersberg, Michael Stevenson, Grant MacIntosh, Kurt Jurgen and Charlie Barrons. Cicchini named soccer All-American Oakville's Amanda Cicchini was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) AllAmerican. It's the latest honour for the junior midfielder, who had two goals and four assists for the West Virginia Mountaineers women's soccer team. Cicchini was also a first team all-BIG EAST selection and was named to the all-tournament team at the BIG EAST championship tournament. Cicchini and fellow Oakville native Deana Everrett, who had 10 goals, nine assists and was selected to the Mid-Atlantic region second team, helped the Mountaineers tie a school record for wins in a season, posting a record of 18-5-2. The award is presented to a student-athlete who fulfills their entire athletic eligibility in eight NCAA sports based on four criteria: classroom, character, community and competition. Dodge shares the team lead with 13 points for the Clarkson Knights. He has 111 points in 126 career games with Clarkson. Clarkson, 10-5 this season, is currently ranked eighth in the NCAA. The list of 20 candidates for men's hockey will be narrowed to 10 by a national media committee. The 10 finalists, to be announced in late January, will then be placed on a ballot for a nationwide vote of coaches, media and fans. Dolphins swimmer wins seven gold Dolphins Swim Club swimmer Sinead Russell rolled sevens at the International Youth Cup competition earlier this month in Etobicoke. Russell's seven swims netted her seven gold medals, seven meet records and seven top-ranked positions in Canada for females age 13-14. Also winning gold for the Dolphins was 12-year-old Lauren Dixon, who won gold in the 100-metre breaststroke and added a silver in the 200m. Both swims were completed in clubrecord time. Other Dolphins finalists at the meet included Peter Kruzyk, James Richards, Joey Weatherill, Maggie Burns, Alex Van Ommen and Isabella Nat. The Youth Cup attracted teams from across Canada, the U.S., the Caymand Islands and Great Britain. Swimmers ranged in age from 12-17.
