www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 28, 2007 - 5 Isolated community has little access to shopping Continued from page 3 will take about 10 days from his shop in Oakville to Nunavut. However, packing sewing machines, bolts of fabric, and upholstery stuffing has taken some ingenuity. And the Oakville families are working to fill in all the space in between with gently-used children's books and comic books, art supplies, digital cameras, hockey skates, helmets, gloves, and sticks plus a few more items that the community has requested. "Remember there are no big box stores, craft stores, local bookstores, etcetera in this community, nor are they nearby. The small local co-op is the only shopping option. Most people are not set-up for online ordering and shipping costs are extremely high. We have so much here in the south of Canada that with a little organizing we thought we could easily share it with our fellow Canadians in the north," said Alix. In late November 2007 Dziedzic called Alix to ask about getting some donations. Alix and her hubby then recruited the other families involved. "Through e-mails and a hand-out flyer we have received wonderful support from the generous Oakville community where we all live," said Alix who also telephoned Dziedzic's contact John Jamieson, in Sanikiluaq to find out what would be most useful to send to the children of this community. "Our Project North Bound group wants to ensure that we are supporting the children of this Inuit community, while honouring their culture," said Alix. "I knew about Nunavut but I did not know it until now." Here I was telephoning John Jamieson in Nunavut ...area code `867.' John Jamieson has lived in the north since 1982, is the coprincipal of the local school (a Kindergarten to Grade 12 with 220 students) and is on the board of the local daycare/community," said Alix. "John grew up in Mississauga and comes south to the Peterborough area to visit his family during holidays, so he is very familiar with the differences between the south and north of Canada," said Alix. The Oakville mom said hours of daylight are few in the winter. The community See Donate page 15 WAREHOUSE CLEARANCE! BOXING WEEK MATTRESS SALE D o Not Pay U l n ti O.A.C.
