A large scale gingerbread replica of the historic Berkeley Street Theatre. It was a labour of love for Oakville's Clare Christensen, a staffer at the Canadian Stage Company, which auctioned off the colossal confection at Berkeley Street Theatre, with proceeds to the Canadian Stage Company, Canada's largest non-for-profit, contemporary English theatre. In celebration of the holiday season, the Company unveiled the 1:50-scale gingerbread replica of its heritage-designated buildings at 26 Berkeley St. Christensen began the project in early November. It took approximately 120 hours to complete. Berkeley Street Theatre was built in 1885 by Edmond Burke and the Victorian-era complex was originally a coal gas pumping and filtering station for the Consumers' Gas Co. The heritage buildings were converted into a centre for contemporary theatre in 1971 and nicknamed The Gas Works. It became home to The Canadian Stage Company in 1987, the year the company formed due to the merger of CentreStage and Toronto Free Theatres.
