8- The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 4, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Province is playing catch up Plowing in driveway poses danger Re: Better way is more expensive, (Letter to the Editor) The Oakville Beaver, Jan. 2 My husband is 84 years old. He has cancer and two heart conditions. Being able to get him to the hospital and to doctors' appointments without delay is important. We tried the program offered by the town for seniors, but not only was it expensive, it was utterly unreliable. We never knew when our driveway would be cleared and indeed, one day we were housebound until almost 5 p.m. before it was cleared. Furthermore that program did not clear the driveway entrance after the Town's snowplow blocked it up. We tried hiring local youths, but that, too, was not reliable. Generally, we were stuck until they finished school and all their afterschool activities. We tried hiring companies, but again, there was no guarantee when they would arrive, and again, they did not return to clear the pile left by the town's plow. On Nov. 15, we had a massive snowfall. In the afternoon, I cleared the driveway. The next morning, my husband had a hospital appointment at 7 a.m. to check for a possible third heart condition. I had to get up at 4:30 a.m. in order to clear the heavy snow packed into the driveway opening by the town plow overnight. There is no program available to us that would have cleared our driveway entrance. We have three sets of friends in Richmond Hill. There, the big city plow is followed by a smaller one that clears the driveways. I have never heard of anyone in Richmond Hill complaining about the tax cost of that service. ELKA RUTH ENOLA Continued from page 6 the Province to other, higher needs. What this story shows is that, as I've been saying all along, the Province has not done its part to keep up with the growth targets it assigns us: although the Bronte GO Station does enjoy a place on the Province's capital catchup list, it's not as high on the list as it needs to be, and all because other places are worse. It all throws into sharp relief the wisdom of the words of the recent Beaver editorial, "We are currently at a crossroads for planning the future of Ontario. Simply telling the Province we don't want to grow is not acceptable. Rather than asking the Province to tinker with its numbers, we should be planning now to accommodate this growth in a manner that won't be detrimental to our health or environment." That's why Halton Regional Council unanimously supported the motion to evaluate future planning population targets in light of our "carrying capacity" -- a capacity for which the Province has its share of responsibility -- and a capacity for which our growth must be and will be measured.
