www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 5, 2008 - 7 Oakville Transit prepares for GO bus strike With a strike by GO Transit bus operators set to take place on Monday, Oakville Transit is advising its customers to prepare for possible delays at GO Transit stations. "Should a GO Transit strike take place on Monday, we have designated alternative drop off/pick up locations in order to minimize delays to Oakville Transit service," said Dalle Vedove, Manager of Transit Operations for Oakville Transit. If a strike does take place, and the GO stations themselves become centres of protest, Oakville Transit will pick up/drop off customers at the following locations: · Bronte GO Station customers will be picked up/dropped off on Wyecroft Road (south side) adjacent to the bus entrance; · Oakville GO Station customers will be picked up/dropped off on Cross Avenue (south side and north side) adjacent to the bus entrance; · Clarkson GO Station customers will be picked up/dropped off on Royal Windsor Drive (north side) adjacent to the bus entrance. Additional staff will be on site to assist customers with their travel plans. The strike, which would affect 30,000 GO Transit bus riders across the GO system, is currently scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, although bus drivers will finish their shift that began Sunday night so that passengers are not left stranded. GO Transit and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1587, which represents most GO employees including bus drivers, ticket sellers, maintenance personnel and office staff, will continue to attend talks in an effort to avoid the job action with both sides meeting as recently as yesterday with a labour conciliator. In the event of a strike, there would be no GO bus service, however, GO Transit officials say they plan to keep regular train service running. Officials are also advising GO Train customers to buy their monthly pass in advance to avoid ticketing lineups that may result if a strike occurs.
