Tim Muttoo, who heads up Genieye's Water Works Division, was part of the team that brought water to Watoto. "A lot of us have experienced life in Canada and North America, and sometimes we don't understand how the whole aspect of picking up a glass of water from your tap is not as easy in other places around the world as it is here," he said. Before 2007 was finished Muttoo would have that appreciation. "The first project we did, which was in February, was what we call dealing with surface water, which is any water that's run off or runs through the land and we treat that water. That was the project we did in the village of Subi," said Muttoo. "The second project we did was a rainwater collection project. So the rainwater is taken from a roof and treated. It's about reusing water and teaching the NEED HELP FINDING A JOB? Employment Solutions Every 56 seconds of each workday, a Goodwill around the world connects someone to a good job. In a video, shown during the day's presentation, Genieye employees can be seen setting up what look like rain gutters on roofs throughout the Watoto village of Bbira, however, instead of spilling on the ground the pipes lead to two huge 20,000 litre storage tanks. "That water is used to feed a kitchen, which feeds 500 orphans a day," said Muttoo. While some of the development and electronics for the project were set up in Oakville, the water tanks and piping were all purchased in Uganda. That way, if something breaks down the Ugandans will be able to fix it themselves. The cost of doing all this, Muttoo noted, was not cheap as Genieye and their partner Aquascape Inc. paid for the projects completely on their own. However, Muttoo said, some things are more important than money. "I left my job in 2003 because I wanted to do something that was more impacting to humanity than something just in the North American bubble world," he said. "I can't live my whole life not trying to address and befriend people in need. With less than a year having passed since the first Watoto village water project took place, a difference is already being made, said Watoto Children's Choir Director Susan Mutebi. "It's been a really huge blessing," she said. "Before the kids had to go and fetch water a couple of miles away, but now because the water is accessible to them they have running water even in the homes, and it's fresh water, so that's a good thing." The Watoto children, many of whom were in the villages when the water projects were completed, also expressed their appreciation through the enthusiasm of their singing and dancing. As the Watoto Children's Choir resumes their world tour so too does Genieye resume its work with plans underway to bring a water project to a third Watoto village in Northern Uganda (Gulu). Discussions with other ministries such as Samaritan's Purse are also underway concerning water projects in Bolivia, Dominican Republic and Liberia. MEMBERS' 1 DAY SALE!
