www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 18, 2008 - 13 Two Oakville students vying for $75,000 scholarship A pair of Oakville students have a chance at a $75,000 scholarship. Oakville's Julie Harmgardt and Stephen Soock have been nominated for the Loran Award. The largest undergraduate merit scholarship in Canada, it is offered to graduating high school students on the basis of character, service and leadership potential. It is not a reward for past achievements, but an investment in the future. Renewable for up to four years of study at one of 25 universities the Loran Award partners with, it comprises an $8,000 annual stipend and a matching tuition waiver, a summer program with funding up to $7,500, one-on-one mentorship and participation in the community of Loran scholars, in total worth up to $75,000. The Loran Award selection starts in the high schools, where each high school may nominate three students. Harmgardt, a student at T.A. Blakelock High School, was selected by the Hamilton committee, and Soock, a student at Iroquois Ridge High School, was selected by the Toronto committee. National interviews will be conducted in Toronto on Feb. 8 and 9. Finalists not offered one of 30 Loran Awards, receive one of 42 Loran finalist awards, and a $3,000 scholarship tenable at any public Canadian university. Results will be announced the week of Feb. 11. T.A. Blakelock's Harmgardt is author, editor and promoter of Killbear, Thanks for the Memories. This 250-page book raised $8,500 for the Killbear National Park volunteer group. She also helped to co-found and served as president for Teens Organizing Local Events for Seniors, Canadian Connections a national unity program for elementary school kids and Always Helping to Spread Joy, which supports local charities. Soock helped educate 1,200 of his fellow students about AIDS by organizing the Stephen Lewis Conference last year. He also helped start a Gay Straight Alliance group at his school. With Scouts Canada, Soock is a senior youth instructor, teaching basic climbing techniques. He has also been a player and captain on both the rugby and football teams, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Guatemala. WE PAY THE TAX EVENT! BUY NOW AND SAVE ON 2007 INVENTORY!
