You need to substitute what your body craves if you've become accustomed to big portions and rich foods. To get back to normal, take it slow. You probably have packed on the pounds, so you can't expect to take them off overnight." Lisa suggests people monitor their eating behaviour. "Eat lots of fresh, crisp vegetables, drink plenty of water, and be sure to include complex carbohydrates such as whole-grain bread and brown rice in your diet. Remember that you still need to eat some fat because your body can't stockpile fat for the rest of the year after the holidays." Portion control can be the big challenge. Yes, whole-grain pasta with broccoli is a healthful lunch, but not three bowls. "You have a measuring cup with you at all times," says Lisa. "It's the palm of your hand." Exercise is a great way to get back in shape, notes Lisa, but she advises people not to make the mistake of overdoing it. Every January and February, gyms are filled with first-time exercisers who insist on doing advanced workouts so that they can get in shape quickly. More often than not, the result is injury and burnout. "You're much better off starting with 15 minutes of moderateintensity exercise three times a week, than to dive into an hour of high-intensity workouts every day. Try to focus on building your stamina and establishing a habit of consistent exercise. You'll feel so much better if you make time for yourself and commit to exercising your body regularly." Lisa suggests taking the dog for a walk, going to the park with the kids, and just making healthy choices, one day at a time. Before you know it, your jeans will fit again and you'll have more energy ­ just in time for spring!
