www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 1, 2008 - 3 Proposal to be filed with Town today Continued from page 1 Hewitt informed those gathered of the company's proposal to build 12,000 14,000 squarefoot "manor houses, which are essentially mansions," each to house from one to three flats. They'll start at about $4 million per flat. Hewitt says he's putting the application to the Town of Oakville today. Edgemere Estate was sold in September, 2007. CHCH reported the sale price at $35.5 million according to a freedom of information report, a number Hewitt would neither confirm nor deny. He said Edgemere Estate Ltd. took title to the property on behalf of a group of developers. Pending approval of zoning and building applications, construction will begin either late this year or by the spring of 2009. This is unwelcome news to Scott Weller, one of several neighbours to attend the invitation-only meeting Saturday afternoon. Weller worries about the additional footprint these "manor homes" will cast on the lot and neighbourhood. "I'm not very happy, not "I've yet to find someone who thinks this is a good idea, but we were given the impression that this is pretty much a done deal." Scott Weller, Lakeshore Road East resident and neighbour ing his plans for Edgemere Estate in the past. "I'm not excited, put it this way, about introducing multi-residential development along Oakville's lakefront, whether that's townhouses, high rises, or whatever," said Bird. "Introducing medium-density residen- tial in southeast Oakville and changing the character of the community will solicit a lot of interest." The developers have to file for a change to medium-density residential housing, something that will generate "a lot of discussion," Bird says, "espe See Estate page 8 happy at all," said Weller, who noted he wouldn't have moved to the neighbourhood six months ago had he known of these plans. "It's not just southeast Oakville that's impacted. It's all of Oakville that's impacted if this goes through. If this gets allowed, what will the next lakefront property do? We are setting a dangerous precedent." Weller said he understood what Hewitt was presenting was "essentially condos," and noted underground parking would be included. "It is so sad when Oakville loses another estate property," he said. "With that, we lose the allure of Oakville, we lose the mystique of the lake, we lose more of our character. Do we want to lose our small-town character? Absolutely not. "I've yet to find someone who thinks this is a good idea, but we were given the impression that this is pretty much a done deal." And it's a deal that's generating a lot of interest. The building set to be torn down, Edgemere Estate's 32,000 square-foot main home, was built in the early 1990s and houses nine bedrooms and 17 bathrooms. The property also boasts a two-storey guest cottage, four-car garage, coach house, pool, 20-seat home theatre, spa area, and even a baseball diamond. Ward 3 Town and Regional Councillor Keith Bird was not invited to the neighbourhood meeting, but said he has had discussions with Hewitt regard- Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning Montessori Preschool Centre 1430 Trafalgar Road (South of Upper Middle Road), Oakville · Visit our Centre · Learn about our Montessori curriculum for children aged 2 1/2 to 6 · September 2008 enrolment information will be available OPEN HOUSE Saturday Feb. 9, 2008 10 a.m. Noon For more information, visit our website at http://earlychildhoodcentres.sheridaninstitute.ca or phone 905-845-9430, ext. 2325.
