The fundraising dinner, dance and silent auction costs $100 per person and will be held at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre, 2340 Ontario St. It will serve up hors d'oeuvres, wine, a three-course prime rib dinner and cash bar. There will be a live band and DJ along with a silent auction and door prizes. It will go toward updating and improving the children's playground equipment at Thistleoaks, a large nonprofit child care centre that has been in business for 19 years and operates at 53 Bond St. The centre is licensed for 191 children and currently provides child care to about 150 families. Chuck MacGregor is the community's latest "jailbird" in the Canadian Cancer Society Jail-NBail event taking place Friday, Feb. 8 at Oakville Place Shopping Mall. When Chuck arrived to Kinoak arena for his son's hockey practice last week, he got a surprise he wasn't expecting. The hockey team (along with the help of Chuck's wife Lois) had called the Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit and put in a warrant for his `arrest'. "Chuck faces some `serious' charges," says Lisa Moffatt, Oakville Unit fundraising co-ordinator. The charges include: impersonating a hockey official, poorly, participating in nutty behaviour and missing a good hockey game while officiating. The team decided to get involved in the Society's Jail-NBail event after a close supporter of theirs was diagnosed with cancer early in the hockey season. In addition to taking part in the fundraiser, the team has also taped their hockey sticks pink to show their support. "One of our main goals this year is to teach the kids what it jailbird's charges and set bail for each perpetrator. Before entering their jail cell, all felons will have their official mug shot taken courtesy of Black's, Oakville Place, and will get their fingerprints taken. Once in jail, participants will have the chance to call friends, colleagues, their mom - anyone that will help them raise their bail (set at a pre-determined amount) to help set them free. Thanks to the support of Telus at Oakville Place, jailbirds will have the luxury of using a new Telus phone in an effort to raise their bail during their stay in jail. The jailbird who raises the most money during the event will get to take one of the phones home with them. Money raised from the Canadian Cancer Society Jail-NBail will help fund research on all types of cancer; offer comprehensive and credible information on cancer, risk reduction and treatment; and, provide support for people living with cancer, family members and friends.
