Despite finding no gunman, wave after wave to tactical unit officers continued to conduct room-by-room searches of the campus until satisfied the gunman could not have eluded them. "The Halton Regional Tactical Team along with the Hamilton Tactical Team are continuing to clear the rooms as they go," said Carr, at a around 4 p.m. "As those rooms are cleared the students and teachers are allowed to exit the building. These things take a long time because we don't want to miss anything." At around 4:30 p.m. students and faculty began pouring out of the campus and the lockdown was officially ended shortly thereafter. Police reiterated that no injuries had taken place during the lockdown, no weapon was found and no shots were fired at anytime. Brittany Stewart was among a large group of students, who filed out of the college just after 5 p.m., when the lockdown was officially declared over. "It was pretty scary," said the 19-yearold art student. "We turned off the lights. We were in the middle of a slideshow, so we shut that off. We locked the door and put a chair in front of it. "We were sitting there waiting. It was actually quite horrible." Stewart said some students in her class were "scared out of our wits," while others "weren't really alarmed." Jamie Basil, 19, fit that second category. She was reached via cell phone Friday and said although her teacher and many students in her class saw the alleged gunman, the waiting was the worst part. "Not scared so much, we're actually just in here waiting," she said. "We're actually just irritated that we have to wait. A lot of us have to go to the bathroom." Rick Clahane was among them, waiting for his daughter Christa, a music theatre student. "Your heart just sinks when I heard that there's a guy walking around the school with a big gun," he said. His daughter called to tell him she was safe, and was hiding under the stairs in the theatre. The pair shared an embrace Friday once the lockdown ended. "What's worse," Clahane said, "is all the rumours going around." The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate this incident. Anyone with information related to it is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 Ext 2215 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
