www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 15, 2008 - 17 Speaker to offer pearls of wisdom on PERL On Monday, Feb. 18, Elaine La Chappelle, an executive board member of the Protecting Escarpment Rural Land (PERL) group, will speak at CFUW-Oakville's general meeting. PERL was co-founded in January 2005 by Sarah Harmer, a well-known local musician who was born and raised in Mount Nemo, and a neighbour, Dan Lyons. The pair has made it their mission to raise awareness of the devastation of quarrying on the Niagara Escarpment, especially in the area north of Burlington. Portions of Harmer's Juno Awardwinning documentary, Escarpment Blues, will be shown. This DVD follows Harmer's 2005 I Love The Escarpment musical tour of towns along Southern Ontario's spine. The tour was specifically designed to enhance an appreciation of the escarpment and increase awareness of the quarrying activities that threaten it. Proceeds from Harmer's single release, Escarpment Blues, go towards financing PERL in its opposition efforts. PERL's mission is, in part, to stop quarrying in north Burlington, to protect and enhance the rural lands and to preserve and enhance the quality of life of the Niagara Escarpment area. La Chappelle will share the special challenges faced by the group and describe how research, lobbying and Harmer's music are helping to get politicians, citizens and bureaucrats to realize the need to protect this UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, 1.8 millions acres of green space, farmland and natural areas in the Greater Golden Horseshoe region. Mineral and aggregate extractors consider this region a prime source of sand, gravel and shale. Quarrying brings all kinds of ecological injustices, including threats to already endangered species, fragile forests and wetlands; the removal of massive amounts of drinking water; creating air pollution from thousands of truck journeys per day; and leaving permanently scarred landscapes. The PERL website outlines the political and social activities of the group at www.perlofburlington.org. All CFUW general meetings are held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1494 Wallace Rd. (near Third Line and Speers Road). To become a member, contact the club membership chair, Carolyne Darimont, through www.cfuwoakville.ca or 905-337-2603. There will be two, one-hour presentations made on Feb. 27, at 6:30-7:30 p.m. or from 7:458:45 p.m. "Please bring your energy, ideas and enthusiasm for the environment to the meeting," said Mervyn Russell, chair of the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Right (OCCPEHR ). "A variety of fun assignments will challenge you to bring people out from your neighbourhood to the Earth Day Clean Up and to the Halton Eco Festival on Saturday, April 19," said Russell. "In combining our two big annual environmental events on to the same day in 2008, we hope that this will generate even greater responses from the public for both the Clean Up and the Eco Festival on April 19," said Sue Carduelis, OCCPEHR Secretary.
