The 13-year-old Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) swimmer was in peak form at the Speedo Eastern Canadian Championships, held at the Etobicoke Olympium. Oldershaw set new OAK records in the 13-14 girls' 800-metre freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley. She was also part of the OAK 13-14 girls' 4x50m medley relay team that eclipsed the previous Canadian record by half a second, joining Tera Van Beilen, Erin Assman and Mika Spencer to finish the race in a time of 2:02.32. In addition, Oldershaw accomplished qualifying times for this year's Olympic Trials, scheduled for April 1-6 in Montreal. Mack Darragh (14-15 boys' 200m individual medley and 200m fly) and Assman (13-14 girls' 50m fly) also set new club records at the meet, which drew the top national and age group swimmers from Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. Annie Harrison and Spencer broke previous club standards as well, only to see those marks bested by teammates. Zack Chetrat, 17, was the club's lone individual medalist, earning bronze in the 200m fly. He added a fourth-place effort in the 100m fly. Overall, OAK swimmers reached the finals (placing among the top 24 in heats) in 15 events. Twenty OAK junior-aged athletes participated in the meet. "This meet was basically a training meet for us," said OAK head coach Christy NAME. "It was necessary to race at Easterns as part of preparation for Olympic Trials as well as junior provincials. For our more experienced swimmers like Zack Chetrat, it served as an opportunity to tune up certain parts of their races before heading into one last block of training before trials. For younger swimmers like Marni, Miki and Tera, it gave them an opportunity to show the swimming world that `we are here and we are ready to race'." Breaking records is nothing new to the 13-14 girls' medley relay team. The girls set four 11-12 girls' Canadian records last year (4x50m and 4x100m in both short and long course), and hope to break more standards at next week's junior provincials in London. Others to reach finals at the Eastern Canadian meet included Curtis Samuel, Brody Dyson, Veronica Davis-Freeman, Jamie Loh, Miguel Lozano and Darragh. Clara Armstrong, Katie Fox, Bridget Jordan, Alex Loh, Holly Olsen, Hilary Turk, Jennifer Wilson and Matt Lawson also represented OAK at the championships. Titans shoot for senior, junior Halton basketball titles today Holy Trinity boy's basketball teams will shoot for senior and junior Halton Division 1 titles today at Sheridan College. Trinity's seniors are slated to tip off with the Nelson Lords at approximately 5:45 p.m., following the junior clash between the Titans and Notre Dame Fighting Irish (a 4 p.m. start). The senior Titans earned a spot in the final with an impressive 76-61 win at St. Thomas Aquinas Friday afternoon, handing the Raiders the first loss of the league season. Trinity was particularly lethal from behind the three-point line, building a 15-point halftime lead and holding off Aquinas' comeback attempts the rest of the way. "Everything we did... we'd make a little run and then they'd hit a couple threes," said Raiders coach Mark Maga. "They did what they had to do. They stopped our main guys and improved their shooting from the last time we saw them." Danny Foster-Roman led the Titans with 20 points. Jahmal McQueen added 19 and Dave Ozimec netted 17. Ryan Thomson had 18 points and Trevor Williams scored 17 for the Raiders, who still have a chance to represent Halton at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations double-A championships in Oshawa next month. The Raiders will host a Peel rep Monday, with the winner advancing to provincials. Trinity's juniors also defeated Aquinas in the semifinals Friday, 41-35 at Trinity. Matchups in the senior and junior Division 2 finals had not been determined by press time yesterday. King's Christian Collegiate was playing Burlington Central in both the senior and junior semifinals, while White Oaks hosted Milton in the other junior semifinal game.
