At its meeting Wednesday, Halton council endorsed having Regional Chair Gary Carr write to the premier requesting a minimum wage increase to $10 to help ensure low wage earners are better able to buy nutritious food. The chairman's letter will also ask for an increase in social assistance benefit rates so that the basic allowance includes a nutrition allowance, and suggest the Province speed up the implementation of its Poverty Reduction Strategy. The survey measures the cost of an adequate diet against the financial resources of Halton residents who are at a low-income level. The results showed the financial resources of families on fixed incomes are spread very thin, and those families are more likely to pay their rent and necessary bills, leaving little or no money for food. The Food Basket initiative also found the average cost for a family of four to heave a healthy diet has increased by about five per cent, going from $120.89 per week in 2006 to $127.08 in 2007.
