Auger, cut by Whitby the past two years, made the Wolves pay in the opening round of the Provincial Women's Hockey League playoffs. The Oakville Ice netminder allowed only four goals in four games, including a shutout, to backstop 12th-seeded Oakville to a 3-1 series upset of the ninth-ranked Wolves. "Stephanie had some special motivation," said Ice head coach Bill Metcalfe. "She's from Belleville and the closest junior team for her was Whitby, but she didn't make it onto the team. She gave us unbelievable, solid goaltending." Oakville clinched the series win with a 3-1 victory in Game 4 Monday at Ice Sports. Chelsea Young provided the game-winner, scoring on a set faceoff play to break a 1-1 tie. Hayleigh Cudmore added an insurance goal, while Paige Goloubef had Oakville's other marker. The Ice had a chance to close out the series the previous day in Whitby, but fell 2-1 in a shootout. Metcalfe was a little worried about his team's psyche with the short turnaround after a difficult loss. "You obviously think as a coach, is the momentum starting to shift?" he said. "Of course that's a worry. We just dug down deep." Particularly centres Dayna Newsom and Sara Finbow, who were double-shifted much of the game after Dayna Kanis left the game with an injury. Kanis, however, did manage to return to the game in the late going. Oakville's other wins in the series came 2-0 in Whitby the previous weekend and 2-1 at home Saturday. Kanis and Goloubef tallied for the Ice in the opener, with Auger making 26 saves. Paula DiFrancesco and Paula LaGamba found the net for the Ice in Game 2, and Newsom was the lone Oakville scorer in the third game. The Ice will play either Stoney Creek or Mississauga in the second round, depending on the winner of the first-round series between Bluewater and Windsor.
