That's not a problem for the PJ's. St. Thomas Aquinas' Peace and Social Justice Club, affectionately known as the PJ's, has more trouble trying to find a place to house its more than 130 members. The group had a day of retreat recently to celebrate Holy Week, which included picking up garbage in the neighbourhood, prayer, speeches, workshops and more. "What we do is we meet every Friday after school, and we plan various events to raise awareness and money for different organizations that are dedicated to peace and social justice," said PJ co-chair, Jaclyn Peluso, 17. Catholic Missions in Canada, The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Heart and Stroke are just three organizations that have benefitted from the PJ's work this year work that has raised more than $5,000, according to the co-chairs. "We do a lot of different events," added co-chair Candice Reggi, a Grade 12 student. "We have our coffee house com- ing up, which is almost like a talent show." The group also volunteers and donates to various causes, like Kerr Street Ministries. "After we donated food, some of the kids went back there to volunteer. It's kind of an ongoing thing. It's not just a one-time charity service," said Peluso. A candy drive, book drives, dances you name it, they've put it together, all in the name of peace and social justice. The PJ's also have speakers come in to address various issues, and attend workshops to learn about social justice. "We went to a mining workshop," said Reggi, "and you really don't think of mining as an issue. You don't realize the unfair labour that's going into it, and the damage the mining is causing to the land." Reggi says she joined the PJ's in Grade 9 "to meet new people, but then I just really came to realize the real purpose of the group." Peluso joined the group in Grade 9 because, while in elementary school, she attended dances organized by the PJ's, and wanted to be part of the group. "I learned what the group is really about, and it's not just planning LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER See Social page 13 SEEKING PEACE AND JUSTICE: Student Hillary Nunez in a moment of prayer during a recent Retreat Day organized by St. Thomas Aquinas' Peace and Justice Club (the PJ's).
