Twice a year, the Friends of the Oakville Public Library organizes and hosts a book sale to raise much needed funds for several library programs and services that could not otherwise be offered. The book sales are just one of the ways in which the Friends of the Library raises funds to support the Oakville Public Library and its customers. This year, Friends of the Oakville Public Library provided over $25,000 for library programs, services and events. The accomplishments for the year include providing funding towards the Teen Writing Contest that creates an opportunity for teens to submit their own expression and win great prizes; the Battle of the Books Competition which involves students and their schools in a trivia competition based on various books; the TD Summer Reading program that encourages children to read over the summer months by keeping a journal and providing incentives to students; and the development of a Teen Area at the Woodside branch where teens can feel welcomed and stimulated. The Spring Book Sale runs from Wednesday, April 16 to Sunday, April 20 and is held at the Oakville Public Library, Central Branch Auditorium on the second floor, 120 Navy St. On Wednesday, April 16, from 6-9 p.m., the sale is exclusively for Friends of the Library members only. If you would like to become a member, you can always purchase a membership at the book sale for $10. Look for your special Earth Hour publication in Saturday's Oakville Beaver Readings at Chapters kicking off Poetry Month in Oakville Poetry Month in Oakville kicks off on Friday, April 4 with the first in a series of Friday night poetry readings at Chapters. The readings will take place from 7-9 p.m. at the book store located in the mall located at Dorval Drive and North Service Road. Poets reading on Friday, April 4 will be from The Pelicans and will include Liz Benneian, Linda Cassidy, Josie di Sciascio-Andrews, Elka Enola, Tom Scott and Jovan Vuksanovich. On Friday, April 11, the poets reading will be from The Ontario Poetry Society (TOPS). On Friday, April 18, the poets will hail from The Inkwell and on Friday, April 25 they will be from The Canadian Federation of Poets. From 7-8 the poets representing these groups will read their poems. The second hour of each event will offer an open mic to the audience, when members of the public can read their poetry, usually in threeminute slots.
