"The health and wellness of children and youth is a prime concern of ours, especially as we work to engage more young people in fun and healthy activities that may become a lifelong habit," said Ireland. Michael Weil, president and CEO of YMCA Canada, also touted Leitch's direction. "This report outlines a viable and needed national strategy to enhance the health of children and youth and leverages the expertise and capacity of children and youth serving organizations such as the YMCA," said Weil. Leitch's report lists three fundamental child and health pillars based on feedback from parents and experts across Canada. "The health and wellness of children and youth is a prime concern of ours." Bruce Ireland YMCA of Oakville CEO The report's recommendations stem from concerns related to injury prevention and safety, obesity and healthy lifestyles, and mental health and chronic illness. The YMCA of Oakville serves children and youths by supporting their physical activity through child care, after-school and weekend programs, sports leagues, recreat- ation instruction programs, summer camps, family memberships, youth groups (that typically include a recreation/sport component), and leadership programs. Water safety and teaching youths swimming and lifesaving skills has been a YMCA fundamental for more than 100 years. After-school initiatives were one of the recommendations in Leitch's report. There has been documentation of a higher incidence of risky behaviours by kids who are unsupervised immediately after school. Nationally, the YMCA is one of the largest providers of children's programs serving 511,500 children and 201,500 youths in more than 250 communities. Leitch's report will influence the development of a national YMCA Healthy Children and Youth Strategy whose goal is to engage many more children, youth and families in an active lifestyle. E, Oakville, ON L6J 2X5 www.alliancehealthcare.ca Workshops on the art of breastfeeding While breastfeeding is considered the most natural and best source of nourishment for a baby, some new mothers find it challenging to get started and/or to stay with it in the long term. Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) is now offering a Prenatal Breastfeeding Workshop, at Milton District Hospital (MDH), aimed at orienting expectant mothers and their families to breastfeeding. The workshop provides the information and support new families need to get off to a good start. The HHS Prenatal Breastfeeding workshop is being offered twice monthly through the MDH Obstetrics Department, located at 30 Derry Rd., Milton. Participants have a choice of registering for the evening session from 7-9 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month or for the morning session from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on the fourth Saturday of each month. The cost of the workshop is $45 and includes both the mother and her supportive guest (partner, sibling, friend or parent). The first workshops were held in March. Jill Hicks, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, is the workshop leader. She explains that over the course of a single two-hour workshop session, participants learn all about breastfeeding including its many benefits, what they can expect -- especially in those first few days after baby's birth, how to latch and position their baby and the changing needs of their growing child. "The prenatal workshop helps expectant mothers learn the art of breastfeeding so they can nourish their child and experience the bonding that the breastfeeding relationship provides," said Hicks. "We have limited our groups to six couples so we can provide our participants with a more personalized educational experience." To register for a Prenatal Breastfeeding Workshop or for more information, contact 905-878-2383, ext. 7610. HHS also continues to offer Prenatal Classes that take place over a weekend once per month. Many topics, including breastfeeding, are discussed in the workshop, but due to limited time, this new Prenatal Breastfeeding Workshop allows for further expansion on specific breastfeeding skills and issues a new mother faces in the first months. For information on the Prenatal Course, call the Oakville Obstetrics department at 908-338-4690, ext. 4662. KNEE, HEEL & ARCH PAIN ARE TREATABLE!
