26 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 2, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Underdog Ice puts scare into top-seeded Stoney Creek By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Oakville Ice came within 10 minutes of equaling what it took the entire Provincial Women's Hockey League the whole season to accomplish. The Ice, looking to force a fifth and deciding game in its second-round playoff series, led the Stoney Creek Sabres 3-2 Friday at Canlan IceSports. However, the Sabres tied the game with 9:32 to play and Brianne Jenner capitalized on a power play with 3:37 remaining to give the Sabres a lead they would not surrender. Stoney Creek added an empty-net goal for a 5-3 win and a four-game victory in the best-offive series. "They're a loaded, experienced, older team," Ice coach Bill Metcalfe said of the Sabres, who lost just twice all season. "We certainly put a scare into Stoney Creek, though. The girls certainly gave it their all and the team's heart was unbelievable." Playing a team that went 27-2-3, the Ice (8-16-8) could have simply packed it in for the season. Instead, after spotting Stoney Creek a 4-0 lead through two periods in the opener, Oakville matched the Sabres goal for goal. Over the next 10 periods of hockey, each team scored nine goals (not including the Sabres' empty netter in the final game). That stretch included a 3-1 Oakville victory in Stoney Creek last Sunday, just the third loss of the season for the Sabres. And there may have been a fourth, were it not for a late penalty call against the Ice Friday. "I was disappointed because the whistle had been thrown out and then we get a penalty that wasn't really consistent with what was being called," said Metcalfe of Geneva Kliman's tripping penalty with 5:03 to play. Oakville rallied from a 2-0 deficit when Jacky Sollis and Paula LaGamba scored 24 seconds apart late in the second. Paige Goloubef then gave the Ice the lead 3:33 into the third. Despite the loss, Metcalfe said the playoff run "is a good thing to build on. I'm very proud of them. We only had five returning players this year so to have the results we've had -- going deep two rounds into the play- offs -- it's definitely hats off to them." The Ice is expected to lose six players next season. Kliman, team captain Taylor Metcalfe, Sarah Finbow and Sollis will leave to attend university, Paula DiFrancesco will head south of the border on a golf scholarship and Elaine Dumas will be overage. While those losses will hurt, Metcalfe is thrilled with the talent coming up through the Oakville minor system. "Oh boy, we've got a really nice crop coming up this year. And big, oh my goodness, you should see the size of our prospects." Which means the Ice will be thinking big, both literally and figuratively, next season.
