The event, which is not open to the public, but rather those who belong to oomama, is being organized by the Ontario Regional Resource Group of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. It will feature five of the 12 grandmothers who recently returned from Africa. Among these is Carole Holmes, a former Oakville resident and founder of oomama. The other four are travelling to Oakville from other parts of Ontario to take part in the conference, according to oomama spokesperson Julia Roles. On Feb. 25, a delegation of 12 Canadian grandmothers from seven provinces travelled to Uganda, South Africa and Swaziland for two and a half weeks to visit African grandmothers and their orphaned grandchildren living in communities struggling with HIV and AIDS. The Canadians are part of a national movement of more than 5,000 grandmothers who are raising awareness and funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. On March 8, International Women's Day ­ the two-year anniversary of the campaign ­ the 12 grandmothers marched in solidarity with more than 1,000 grandmothers and women in Swaziland. Upon their return to Canada, each woman has committed to a year of public speaking and community outreach. Nearly 200 grandmothers groups have formed across Canada in support of the Grandmothers' Campaign and more than $2 million has been raised and sent to Africa. The campaign aims to raise awareness, build solidarity and mobilize support in Canada, and beyond, for Africa's grandmothers and the orphans in their care.
