www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday April 12, 2008 - 33 Conditioning, strategy Four local schools in Halton hoops semis pay off in second period Continued from page 30 scored 14 seconds later, when MacDonald returned the favour to Song. Harvey attributes his team's explosive second period to strategy and good conditioning. "We knew they were starting to wear down," he said. "We went with really short shifts, like 25-30 seconds [long]. The other team had long, one-minute shifts." Oakville iced the game 50 seconds into the third period on an unassisted goal by Matthew Spencer. York-Simcoe's Isaiah Fernandes added a goal midway through the third to make the score appear closer than the game actually was. Oakville goalie Michael Bradshaw stopped 20 shots in the win, as the Rangers outshot the Express 22-14. Oakville played again last night against the Greater Toronto Hockey League's North York Rangers, after the Oakville Beaver's deadline. Its other round-robin games will take place today at 1:30 p.m. against the GTHL's Toronto Marlies, and 6 p.m. versus the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario's Elgin Middlesex Chiefs. Semifinal games will be played tomorrow at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., with the championship game being held at 3 p.m. All tournament games are being played at Joshua's Creek Arenas. Four local schools were crowned as division champions this past week in Halton elementary public school tier 1 basketball play. In the East (all-Oakville) division, E.J. James claimed the girls' championship while River Oaks won the boys' title. Central (east Burlington and west Oakville schools) division pennants went to Heritage Glen (girls) and Captain R. Wilson (boys). All four teams will advance to Tuesday's Halton semifinals at E.C. Drury High School in Milton, where winners will earn berths in Thursday's Halton final at Burlington Central High School. E.J. James broke out to an early lead and never looked back in the East girls' final, defeating Falgarwood 23-13. Heather Bonnell paced E.J. James with eight points, while Alyssa Bull added five. Falgarwood, which suffered its first loss of the season, scored nearly half its points from the free throw line. The East boys' final was a matchup of one-loss teams. Joshua Creek's Mike Malo did all he could, scoring 24 points -- including 15 in the final quarter -- but River Oaks' balanced attack proved to be too much in a 46-37 final. Mitch Atkinson and Dylan Munro each scored 17 for River Oaks, which got scoring from seven different players. Dillon Brooks contributed 11 in a losing cause for Joshua Creek. In the Central girls' title game, Heritage Glen continued its Cinderella run with a 24-21 upset of Burlington's Frontenac. The game was tight until the fourth quarter, when Heritage Glen was able to open up a six-point lead and then held on for the win. Nova Bozinoski and Lydia Gibson, Heritage Glen's two tall forwards, scored 10 and eight points, respectively. Heritage Glen finished fourth in regular-season play before surprising Brookdale 25-24 in the division semifinals, and will face North division champion Stewarttown in the Halton semifinals. It was an all-Oakville clash in the Central boys' final, as Captain R. Wilson edged Pine Grove 30-27 in an evenly-played contest. Wilson's scoring was distributed among only two players, with big man Cole Graves leading all scorers with 18 points and Raj Dhagni netting 12. Pine Grove's offence came from Simon Harmgardt (nine points), Lazar Kojovic (eight), Jesse Flores (four) and Tommy Hong (four). Wilson will take on Burlington Central, winner of the West, in the semifinals. WHO DOES IT...
