Continued from page 18 Swaziland, Adjoa, who travels eight hours on bus to raise her grandchildren in South Africa. "Surely you and I can make the world a better place," said Pelletier-Kelly. Adjoa doesn't have any papers, so she cannot ask for permanent residency and she lives in poor housing conditions. Pelletier-Kelly explained how Thembalethu Home Based Care, which concentrates on homebased care, has been helping the family. Another SLF project helping grandmothers is Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust based in Hillcrest, South Africa. The project offers basic needs for people in the area. Grandmother Cousineau, a founding member of Grassroots Grannies, spoke about grannies who "will spend a day or two without meals" and how as a result, the project is providing feeding schemes to families. The presentation went on to focus on social justice and security. The audience heard stories of women who were beaten and didn't know they had rights. Grandmother Baron, from Grey Grannies, went into detail about health issues and how grandmothers are being educated and provided with good nutritious meals through the SLF. The presentation ended with a recollection of the International Women's Day march in Swaziland, where more than 1,000 women marched for change and empowerment. Holmes told listeners how, despite the harsh realities, women were "taking back the power" as they yelled "Payz Gomb Comb," which is a phrase reserved for the monarchy and means "up in arms," according to Holmes. And as the conference ended, Canadian grandmothers too began to chant, "Payz Gomb Comb, Payz Gomb Comb" filled the St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School room.
