Oakville defeated Mississauga and tied both Cornwall and Leaside in round-robin play, advancing to the championship game. Mississauga avenged its opening-round loss in the final, however, notching the game-winner in the final minute. Two members of the Canadian women's Olympic team, Vicky Sunohara and Lori Dupuis, presented the girls with their medals following the final. Members of the Hornets are Jennifer Newman, Jackie Jung, Asst Coach Greg White, Maddie Brown, Annie Nasato, Kirsten Miller, Megan Watkins, Alex Thorn, Lindsay Stenason, Andrea Benac, Nicole Spadatto, Carly White, Victoria Bach, Stephanie Loukes, Amanda Pereira, Nicole Collaton, Stephanie Solty and Colleen O'Kelly. Will Stenason, Greg White, Elmo Nasato, Dave Watkins and Andrew Benac coach the team, Neila Pereira and Kirsten Jarvis are trainers, and Peter Thorn is the manager. Tournament raised $5,000 for charity The Elgin Middlesex Chiefs were not the only winners at the Ontario Hockey Federation atom AAA championship tournament, held last weekend in Oakville. Organizers announced Wednesday that the event raised $5,000 for the tourament charity, the Oakville Hospital Foundation. Tournament co-chairs Hans Taal and Dana Harvey, along with Minor Oaks Hockey Association president Mike Zardo, presented Community Giving Oakville Hospital Foundation director Mike Bartlett with a cheque following the Chiefs' win in the championship game. Athletiques set new personal bests Brian Champion lived up to his surname at the recent Minor Track Association indoor championships at York University. The 12-year-old won the senior boys' 800metre walk title, posting a personal-best time of 5:23.86. He also placed fifth in shot put (8.07 metres) and ninth in long jump (3.25m). Champion was one of four Athletiques International athletes to break personal records at the championships. Hailey den Elzen, 10, completed the atom girls' 60m semifinal in a time of 9.07 seconds. That performance qualified her for the final, where she finished fifth with a time of 9.20s. Den Elzen also won bronze in shot put with a best-ever heave of 6.24m, and came fifth in long jump (3.84m). Miriana Dimitrijevic, 11, had personalbest times in both her events. She chopped 12-hundredths of a second off her 60m time, finishing in 9.62s, and placed second in her section of the 200m race (34.57s). Alia Bartholomew won the 200m girls' race with a personal-best time of 32.57 seconds. She trimmed nearly four-tenths of a second off her previous-best time in the 60m heats, completing the race in 9.37s, but stumbled at the start of her semifinal race and was eliminated. Athletiques is currently training for the upcoming high school season.
