(J.T.) Tuck Public School girls' basketball team had a clear hometown advantage in the Halton championship game. The J.T. Tuck Cougars -- located in southcentral Burlington -- downed Oakville's Heritage Glen Public School 25-15 at Burlington Central High School Thursday night. The crowd noise in support of the hometown team was deafening. "I think it definitely did," said Tuck coach Kevin Ridge, regarding whether the crowd support energized his team. "Our principal organized a bus to get the other students here; I think we fed off that." After a low-scoring first half, Tuck seemed like they would be heading into the fourth quarter trailing. However, with 3.4 seconds left in the third period, Tuck's Martha Dunbar caught a long outlet-pass and managed to get a tough layup to drop before time expired to move ahead by one point, 16-15. Tuck's defense used that momentum and shut Heritage Glen out the rest of the way. Sarah Ricciuti led the way for the Cougars with some critical fourth quarter offense and finished with a game-high 10 points. She was also crucial to the Lady Cougars squad that won the Halton championship last year. Despite the loss, Heritage Glen coach Don Bonanca was happy with his team's effort. "We played hard," he said. "All the girls got into the game and contributed." Heritage Glen was a long shot to even make the finals. They finished with a 6-3 regular season record and managed to upset an undefeated Brookdale Public School team in the centralHalton semifinal game. They followed that by again upsetting an undefeated favourite, Stewarttown Public School, in the Halton-wide semifinal game, 33-28. "Incredible," said Bonanca about his team's improbable playoff run. "We were able to beat two undefeated teams just to get here. They had an exceptional playoffs." Heritage Glen was led by the ferocious play of point guard Julia Lombardi, who left the game early in the third quarter with a bloody-nose but returned shortly after. Nova Bozinoski led all Heritage scorers with nine points, while Lydia Gibson chipped in with four.
