www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 23, 2008 - 17 Sisters run with spring sprint alongside their mom A pair of Oakville sisters is not just making time for homework this spring, but also fundraising for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada's Toronto Spring Sprint. Sandra Encinales, 17, and her sister Michelle, 14, have grown up in River Oaks which they've called home for nearly a dozen years. While the pair now attends high school at Mississauga's French School, Ste. Famille, they have supported the Toronto Spring Sprint -- to be held in Toronto this Saturday -- as it's a cause that hits close to home. Their mom, Flavia's, brother died of a brain tumour years ago at the age of 37. He left behind a wife and two small children. As Flavia is on the Toronto Spring Sprint organizing committee, her daughters also dove into the fundraising last year -- with outstanding results. Sandra, a Grade 12 student, does hair wraps onsite at the Spring Sprint event while Michelle did fundraising at their school. Together they raised more than $1,500 last year -- a whopping $1,200 from Michelle. Michelle held a fundraising school event that raised $1,200. Michelle is planning to double her efforts this year to reach $3,000. "I was first inspired to become part of the Spring Sprint when I went to a Spring Sprint organizing committee meeting with my mom. I was inspired by the whole team's ideas and commitment," said Michelle, a Grade 9 student. "I started brainstorming my own ideas and came up with holding a "port libre," a day where students paid $2 to wear whatever they wanted instead of their uniform," she said. Michelle admits that raising money is a lot of hard work and takes up a lot of time. but in the end believes it is really worth it. "I try to get my friends and school involved. On the day of the school fundraiser, my friend Sabrina helped me count the money for three straight hours," said Michelle. "People, including teenagers, get caught up in our own lives and fail to realize how lucky we all are. We should all do something to help others in our community. Anyone can make a difference," she said. "Last year, on the day of the Spring Sprint there was joy and happiness in the air, despite some cold weather. Helping a charity is something that you decide to do for yourself," said Michelle. "People don't realize the feeling you get when you know that you've changed someone's life. It is so good and refreshing." "This year's Spring Sprint Committee is extremely proud and honoured by Michelle and Sandra's commitment to this year's event. They are true crusaders dedicated to raising funds towards finding a cure for brain tumours," said Sherri Jordan, Spring Sprint, Event Co-ordinator. The Guys From Hamilton Are Back!!
