www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 25, 2008 - 25 Pasta Night just one item on Abbey Park's plate By Natalie Zazulyk GRADE 12, ABBEY PARK H.S. C ircular tables set with red, white and green tablecloths, flickering candlelight, cheerful daffodils, fantastic entertainment and music, solicitous wait staff in classic black attire, and a superb pasta dinner --this was the sophisticated scene April 3 at Abbey Park High School's annual Pasta Night fundraiser dinner for the Canadian Cancer Society, which raised almost $2,600. Nearing its 40th year, Pasta Night (formerly Lasagna Night at Queen Elizabeth Park School) has always been a success, raising thousands of dollars each year through a deli- cious homemade pasta dinner, made by the Foods and Nutrition classes and their teachers and generous donations from the surrounding community. We could not have done it without the help of our sponsors who generously donated food, supplies, gift certificates, money and services. All of us at Abbey Park would like to extend a huge, heart-felt thank you to our biggest supporter, Mr. Robert DiFilippo of Price Chopper (Third Line and Dundas Street) who donated all the ground beef, tomato sauce, and pasta for our dinner. We would like to specially thank Marilu's Market in Burlington for donating all the vegetables for our veggie pasta sauce. Thank you also to Abbey Park High School's Parent Council, Starbucks, The Barn, Monastery Bakery, Edible Arrangements, Mr. Sub, Rogers Video, Water Express, Dominion, Great Canadian Superstore, Bruno's, Sobeys, PepsiCo, Atlantic Packaging, M and M Meat Shops, Dairy Queen, Grey Canada, AIM Trimark, Salon Venere, Supercuts, Dairy Queen, Antonio's Unisex Hair, Bob-R Hair Salon, and the McDonald and Hart families for their much-appreciated support and donations. Finally, thank you to all of the enthusiastic students and wonderful staff members (and the ever-friendly "caf ladies") who helped make the evening a fantastic success. We hope to see you next April 2009 for APHS Pasta Night. Believe it or not, Pasta Night is only one of the many fundraising activities Abbey Park has spearheaded this year. Our initiatives include the annual Terry Fox fundraiser run in September, the Halloween for Hunger food drive in October (our most successful food drive ever and the most food the food bank has ever received from a single school, thanks to the efforts of Grade 12 student Gustavo Marquez), AIDS awareness/fundraising night, the Christmas Mitten Tree and Toy Drive, the Piggy Band for Poverty initiative, Culture Fest, the Hip Hop Helps music extravaganza in support of War Child Canada, the recent 30-Hour Famine to support World Vision, the upcoming Fashion Revolution Show, which will support Abbey Park's Angel Fund, as well as the CN Tower Climb to support World Wildlife, and The Inside Ride for Cancer on April 24. Abbey Park is indeed a community of learners embracing communities.
