www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 25, 2008 - 49 Quigley rink wins lefty consolation The Oakville Curling Club played host to the 35th Men's and 29th Women's editions of the World Lefthanders Curling Championship recently. The event -- held annually in Oakville -- featured the host teams, entries from Boston, Detroit and Utica, N.Y., and two clubs from Scotland. The Oakville women's rink, skipped by Cynthia Quigley, was ousted before the championship, but managed a win in the consolation championship match. Her rink included Lisa Coulman, Cathy MacIntosh and Lynn Downey. In the men's championship, Ken Sawchenko's Oakville rink was upset by Guy Racette and his team from the Royal Canadian Curling Club in Toronto. Sawchenko's foursome included John Earl, John King and Mike Renton. Lew Falconer and Don Goddard, two members of the Oakville Curling Club participating in the men's championship, were recognized for their involvement in the event since its conception in 1973. Nick Dodge Stefan Legein John Tavares Steve Mason Mixed news for hockey prospects Dodge, Legein on verge of going pro; Tavares bounced from OHL playoffs; Mason's year ended by injury By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF and 16 points in 16 games. Tavares had 40 goals and 118 points in 59 games in the regular season. Mason undergoes surgery The third Oakville member of that world junior squad also got some bad news, though there is a silver lining for goaltender Steve Mason. Mason had season-ending surgery on his knee last Friday, though his Kitchener Rangers teammates have advanced to the OHL final and will host next month's Memorial Cup. The surgery repaired a minor ligament tear that is not expected to have any long-term effects. It is expected to sideline him for four to six weeks. The Memorial Cup runs from May 1625 in Kitchener. Mason played only two games in the Rangers' first-round playoff series, when the team said he was simply suffering from the flu. Mason showed no ill effects when he returned for the second round, posting a shutout in the series opener and then making 64 saves in a triple-overtime victory to earn OHL player-ofthe-week honours. However, he limped off the ice in the second period of the next game and hasn't played since. Mason had a 5-0 record, a 1.92 goals-against average and a .946 save percentage in the playoffs. The third-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets was 32-7-1 with London and Kitchener during the regular season. It has been a mixture of good and bad news for Oakville hockey players in recent weeks. For Nick Dodge and Stefan Legein, there were reasons to smile. Dodge signed his first professional contract last Wednesday when the Carolina Hurricanes gave the 21-year-old a two-year deal that included a $60,000 signing bonus. The two-way contract will pay him $475,000 and $500,000 if he makes the Hurricanes, or $50,000 and $55,000 to play in the minors. Dodge had 12 goals and 14 assists in 39 games with Clarkson University and was named the East Coast Athletic Conference's best defensive forward. Clarkson finished first in the ECAC and earned its second straight berth in the NCAA tournament. The Clarkson captain finished his college career with 42 goals and 124 points in 150 games with the Golden Knights and was named a 2007 second-team All-American. Carolina selected Dodge in the sixth round, 183rd overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Legein assigned to AHL LL! PLAY BA ER M ALL SUM ...with the Oakville Girls Softball Association.
