Residents and sports clubs are reminded to stay off sports fields until they officially open in late April, and in some instances mid to late May. "Turf is particularly vulnerable to damage during the wet spring weather, especially this spring due to the amount of snow we received over the winter. Our fields are saturated," Chris Mark, director of Parks and Open Space, said. "Most fields will be in use seven days a week come the summer season, so this off-season allows our staff to repair the extensive wear and tear on the fields." The official opening dates for Oakville's sports fields are as follows: April 26, all ball diamonds and B and C soccer fields (not lit or irrigated); May 1, school fields; May 12, class A soccer fields; May 31, Pine Glen 1 (sand field) and Harman Gate. Sports field permits generally run from May 1 to October 1, 2008 and all organized activities require a permit.
