20 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 30, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Boosting awareness Play for the cause about Type 1 diabetes Oakville resident Cristin Walsh is out to raise awareness of the cause of Type 1 diabetes with two fundraisers in May. Walsh's daughter, Elianna, is a Type 1 diabetic. She was diagnosed in September 2006 at only 13 months old after almost losing her life. Last year Walsh participated in the Walk for a Cure in Hamilton and her team raised more than $6,500. Walsh believes recognition and awareness is needed to let people know about Type 1 diabetes and the challenges that Elianna and so many other children face on a daily basis just to remain healthy, some of which include up to seven finger pokes and five injections a day. This year Walsh will first host a Texas Hold'em Poker Fundraiser and Auction on Friday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m., with poker beginning at 8 p.m. The event will be held at the Knights Of Columbus Hall on Wallace Road (near Third Line and Speers Road). Nearly 200 tickets are available. The second fundraiser is a Neighbourhood Rummage Sale for a Cure to be held Saturday, May 31. It will begin at 8 a.m. and continue throughout the day at 1208 Garthdale Court. For information contact 905842-1807.
