The Blades have dropped their first two games at the RBC Royal Bank Cup national junior A hockey championships, the first time all year they have lost consecutive contests. Oakville was flat and lethargic in a tournament-opening 5-4 loss to the host Cornwall Colts Sunday, then lost a 4-3 overtime heartbreaker to the Weeks Crushers Monday. In order to advance to this weekend's semifinal round, the Blades will almost certainly need to win their final two roundrobin matches. Having already lost to the two lowestranked teams in the tournament, Oakville will need to beat the top-seeded Camrose Kodiaks and second-ranked Humboldt Broncos. That task begins this afternoon, when the Blades and Broncos meet for a 2 p.m. start. "We've made life difficult for ourselves," said Blades defenceman Chris Haltigin, who scored one of Oakville's goals Monday. "We've kind of laid an egg two straight days. Now we have to beat the two teams ranked higher than us." The Crushers scored late and then won 5-4 in overtime, dropping the Blades to 0-2 at the tournament. One of the Blades' strengths through the playoffs, dominant third-period play, has abandoned them at the Royal Bank Cup. Oakville held the lead in the final frame of both games, but surrendered two third-period goals in the loss to Cornwall and allowed Weeks to tie Monday's game with less than four minutes to go in regulation. The Crushers won the game on a power play, as Geoff Hum's point shot deflected off Blades defenceman Braden Birch and past screened Oakville goalie Oliver Wren. The Blades had been penalized for too many men on the ice only 37 seconds before. "Things are slipping through our fingers. A bad bounce here, shots from the point, guys not paying the price to get the puck out along the walls," Oakville head coach Carlo Coccimiglio said. "We've got to step up, go at (Humboldt) Wednesday and give it all we've got. (Our players) have to check their souls and see what they're made of." Humboldt should be hungry for a win today as well, having lost 2-1 to Camrose in Monday's other game. Humboldt, Cornwall and Weeks each had one victory in the tournament, entering last night's contest between Weeks and Cornwall, while Camrose sat in first with a 2-0 record. The Blades will close out their roundrobin schedule tomorrow with a 7 p.m. game against Camrose. Moodie was Oakville's player of the game Sunday, with Farris claiming the honours Monday...Moodie had breakaway chances to put the Blades up two goals in the third period of both games, but missed the net Sunday and was stopped Monday. Coccimiglio joked he has instructed Moodie to turn around and skate to the bench the next time the forward gets in alone on a goalie... The Ed Lumley Arena used to be the home of the Cornwall Royals, before the OHL squad moved to Newmarket (now the Sarnia Sting) in 1992... The Blades scored three goals in 83 seconds against the Colts Sunday, taking a 3-2 lead in the second period.
