www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 17, 2008 - 3 STUDENT EXCELLENCE 2008 Halton District School Board honours Oakville students On May 1, the Halton District School Board held its 24th annual Celebration of Student Excellence, a special evening that recognized one student from each of the board's schools. The honoured students are representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and leadership, or other specific criteria that reflects the school's unique priorities. Among the 93 students honoured were 32 from Oakville. Each of the students pictures and their accompanying statements will be published in the Oakville Beaver Weekend edition over the next three weeks. This page is the first in that series. · Kate Wickham, Grade 8, Abbey Lane: Kate is a suitable recipient of this award, demonstrating excellence in a number of areas; academically, athletically, as well as in a leadership role. She is involved in a wide range of athletic activities at Abbey Lane, including track and field, volleyball and basketball teams, and is a member of the Senior Band. She enthusiastically volunteers for a number of school events, providing leadership as well as positive motivation for her peers. · Julie Todaro, Grade 5, Linbrook: Julie combines academic achievement with enthusiastic participation in many student clubs and sport activities, such as Carnaval and the cross-country team. A natural leader and role model, she consistently exhibits a positive attitude towards herself and others, by helping, encouraging and celebrating the successes of all students in school. · Michelle Johannesson, Grade 8, Brookdale: In the classroom, Michelle works collaboratively with all of her peers and teachers, achieving high academic standing. She is also a highly valued contributor to extra curricular pursuits: from the rehearsal halls (Band and Drama) to the Parliamentary Chambers (Deputy Prime Minister), through her administrative assistance (morning announcements, yearbook committee) and her commitment to the Broncos senior sports teams (basketball, soccer, track & field and volleyball). Michelle consistently strives to bring out the best in herself, as well as those around her. · Justin Harrigan, Grade 8, Captain R. Wilson: Justin gives his best at all times, striving to achieve academically, modeling and following the four Tribes agreements. He is a Peer Mentor and a participant in many of the activities at CRW. His quiet leadership provides a role model for his peers and younger students. · Samantha Creighton, Grade 5, Chisholm: Samantha Creighton is a well-rounded student who is strong academically and athletically. She has a very caring nature and goes out of her way buddies, and more. · Avery Longmore, Grade 8, Eastview: Avery contributes to school in the area of leadership, citizenship and academics. She is an active member of our school's volleyball and track teams, acted as a student coach for the Grade 6 volleyball team, assisted with the Oakville and District Humane Society food and toy drive, and maintains a high average. Avery demonstrates respect and consideration for others, and is a highly regarded member of the Grade 8 group. · Neha Sharma, Grade 8 F a l g a r w o o d : Neha is a kind, compassionate student whose commitment to excellence is an inspiration to her peers. Neha is top in academics, an accomplished basketball player, a quiet leader, a willing helper, and a friendly face in the hall. · Morgan Arndt, Grade 7, Forest Trail /Ecole Forest Trail: Morgan is an avid dancer, class rep on the student parliament and an active member of the school band. She volunteers her time as a student monitor for lunchroom, classroom and office duties. In her community she volunteers at the Kerr Street Mission on Saturdays, assisting with programs supporting youth and low-income families. Her enthusiasm and conscientious attitude is evident in everything she does. · Rochelle Alexander, Grade 6, Gladys Speers: Rochelle is conscientious and works very hard to achieve her goals. Rochelle has shown leadership both in the classroom and around the school as class prime minister, Kindergarten and bus helper and member of the Silver Birch reading club and cross-country team. Rochelle is polite, kind and a positive role model. · Jason Mitchell, Grade 8, Heritage Glen: Jason is a Grade 8 student who consistently shows his talents in our classrooms, during special events, and in his interests both in and outside the school. His friends describe him as a dedicated leader who supports his peers, models excellence and is a catalyst to get things done. He is a valued member of this year's iMovie group, concert band, athletic council and the school's musical production. Jason also plays hockey and baseball at a competitive level in Oakville. · Jing Bo Yu, Grade 8, Joshua Creek: Jing Bo has demonstrated outstanding qualities at Joshua Creek as evidenced by his consistent level of achievement, his participation on a myriad of clubs and teams, his commitment and leadership role in Student Council, and his dedication and participation in the school musical production. We are very pleased to honor and recognize Jing Bo's accomplishments, which he has made as part of sustaining and enhancing the positive climate, culture and community of our school.
