18 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 31, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com ABCs of skin cancer Making a difference Learn to recognize the signs of melanoma Do you know the ABCs of skin cancer? Do you know what causes skin cancer? Could you be at risk? Halton Healthcare Services Dermatologist Dr. Sheetal Sapra will answer these questions and more at a free community seminar The Skin Cancer Epidemic, on Tuesday, May 27. The forum takes place at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium of Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) located at 327 Reynolds St. The seminar is part of the Living Healthy series offered by Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) and is presented in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, Wellspring and the Region of Halton Health Department. It is estimated that in Canada there will be 4,600 cases of melanoma skin cancer and 73,000 cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer diagnosed this year. Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of skin cells. If left unchecked, these cancer cells can spread from the skin into other tissues and organs. Since skin cancer generally develops in the outermost layers of skin, it is usually clearly visible and easy to detect. Certain types of skin cancer can be deadly, but with early detection and proper treatment it is highly curable. As skin cancer is so prevalent today, dermatologists also recommend that everyone learn how to recognize the signs of skin cancer. Sapra will speak in greater detail about this topic, to help identify the signs of skin cancer and how to reduce risk. To reserve a seat for the free seminar or for more information, call 905338-4379 or 905-873-0111, ext. 4379 or email elittle@haltonhealthcare.on.ca. The discussion will begin at 7 p.m., but displays and refreshments will be available from 6:30 p.m. For more information on this topic contact your physician or the Canadian Cancer Society at www.cancer.ca or Wellspring at www.wellspring.ca or 905-257-1988 CHRIS KORNACKI / OAKVILLE BEAVER TRACK RECORD: Six-year-old Alex DeVellis delivered $100 to the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit. In February he heard an advertisement for a cancer fundraiser and decided to create his own campaign in an effort to help make a difference. He then ran a lap of the track at his school Post's Corners every single day and collected pledges from friends, family and neighbours for his running. Alex and his mom Sharon stopped by the Oakville Unit to deliver the proceeds -- and since then Adam has raised another $52 toward his next donation.
