www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 4, 2008 - 23 Camp runs throughout summer Continued from page 22 bullying and the outcome was amazing." The personal growth of the students participating in the full-day camp is amazing, according to Gabriella Colavecchio, a former student of West End Studio Theatre and a current theatre studies major at the University of Guelph. She volunteered at last year's summer camps and has been hired on this year as an instructor. "We help these kids find themselves and their personalities," Colavecchio said. "The age that they are, they are going through insecurities and teenage angst, so they can really let loose and it has been so nice to see them grow." A popular aspect of the full-day camps is a trip to see a show at the Stratford Festival. This year, youths will see either Romeo and Juliet or The Music Man. "Stratford has plays that are appropriate for kids and they always enjoy it," Mustafa said. "Romeo and Juliet is so popular and lots of kids are studying it in school. And The Music Man is great musical fluff." Classes are capped at 20 students for the junior camp and 40 students for the senior camp. Teams of professional actors and directors, as well as theatre students enrolled in post-secondary institutions oversee the sessions, with outside presenters brought in for specialty workshops. This year, there will be an emphasis on dance and choreography in the guest-presented workshops. "Because our camp is not a day camp with theatre, but a theatre camp, it is very important that the instructors are qualified," Mustafa said. Spots are filling fast as the camp has an 80 per cent return rate, according to Mustafa. There are currently a higher number of spaces available in the sessions scheduled for early July. Both summer camps operate out of West End Studio Theatre at 1109 North Service Rd. E.
