34 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 7, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Griffiths good as gold Aquinas sprinter edges Brampton rival for 100m title Move over Donovan Bailey, Oakville has another sprint champion. St. Thomas Aquinas' Miana Griffiths won the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) senior girls' 100-metre gold medal Friday afternoonin Hamilton, just prior to the Oakville Beaver's press deadline. The Grade 12 student took the title with a time of 11.98 seconds, just three one hundredths of a second ahead of Brampton's Shannae Steele. Asked what the difference was between being a silver medalist last year and a gold medalist this year, the 18 year old said the biggest factor was improved strength, the result of "a lot of work. If you don't put anything into it, you can't get anything out of it. It paid off today." Griffiths described the race as "kind of sketchy." Her time was slower than the 11.87 she ran last year to take the silver, a fact she attrbuted to a strong headwind. Griffiths was very familiar with Steele. They finished one-two at the regional meet last week and they two had squared off many times at York University with Griffiths holding the upper hand in their head-to-head matches. Griffiths received 21 scholarship offers for next year and has decided to attend the University of Guelph. Shortly after Griffiths' victory, teammate Colleen Hennessy earned a silver medal in the 1,500m. Hennessy was fourth heading into the final lap but quickly passed two of her rivals. She came to the line just a few strides behind the winner. Hennessy's time was four minutes, 43.07 seconds GOLDEN GIRL: Miana Griffiths, seen here at last year's OFSAA track meet, won OFSAA gold in the senior girls 100m Friday in Hamilton. Rakhra said the victory over the Jaguars provided a little revenge for Abbey Park after Christ the King edged out the Eagles for the right to represent Halton at the AAAA provincial championships. Both teams were 6-0-2 in league play this year, and Abbey Park's goal differential was five goals better than the Jaguars, but Christ the King earned the spot because it gave up one fewer goal in the regular season. "We should have gone through," said Rakhra, who plays under-16 rep with Clarkson. "We also have five super seniors on our team, so it was their last year to prove something. They were on the team last year as well, so that's two years in a row winning." The Eagles edged Loyola 3-2 in last year's AAA OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY 2-4 championship. Abbey Park stumbled out of the gate Thursday, allowing Christ the King to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Eagles fought back and Teo Stayonov made it a 2-1 game midway through the second half. With a few minutes left in regulation, Ian Fobes jumped on a lose ball in front of the Jaguars keeper and punched it in from a few yards out to send the game to extra time. The action was intense throughout overtime, with both teams creating numerous scoring chances. Finally, the ball entered Christ the King's half with only a few minutes before penalty kicks. Abbey Park controlled the ball and set up on offence, leading to Rakhra's decisive marker. "(Rakhra) is a clutch player," said Komljenovic, who was assisted this season by Jon Ng. "He's a young player, but he's an excellent player."
