Our association with the Canadian Organic Growers, has given the Kerr Village market an edge over other area farmers' markets. You'll find many of the same sought after organic and artisan farm vendors at Kerr Village that sell at Toronto's popular Dufferin Grove and Brick Works markets. It's early yet for fresh produce, but many of our seasonal vendors are returning along with some new ones. Chubaty Farms will be back selling garlic and pepper jellies, Raven Stone Farm with potted herbs, flowers, Whole Circle Biodynamic Farm returns with their grass fed, pasture-raised beef and pork, and new this year is Deer Valley Farm with venison cuts, sausages and burgers. You'll also find fresh baked breads and sweets, spices, teas, coffee and lots more. We encourage everyone to talk to the farmers and even ask about visiting the farms to see how the food is grown with environmental stewardship and ethical labour practices. The opening day kids' yoga workshop at the centre stage and parents can shop while their kids take part or join in. Oakville Master Gardeners is hosting its annual fundraising plant sale. The organization is a non-profit one that aims to educate the public in all areas of horticulture. It offers advice at numerous events including Canada Blooms and the CNE. Blues guitarist Max Bent will be back with rising star, Scott Fitzpatrick. Music starts at 10 a.m. Take a break in the sun or shade. The Market Café will feature breakfast and lunch items made with seasonal ingredients from local farms, including scrambled egg burritos, yogurt smoothies and freshly-roasted Raymond Eme's Coffee. Raymond's coffee beans will also be for sale in returnable mason jars. Kerr Village is also growing its program offerings this year, including new hands-on workshops, contests, and different special events every week hosted by local NGOs. Throughout the season there'll be a visit from author Margaret Webb, a drumming group from Zimbabwe, an Organic Iron Chef Competition, Mardi Gras Festival, Barnyard Bingo, a visit from award-winning chef Chris Haworth, Indian Music and Mystic Spa, Escarpment Trivia Challenge, a Kids' Cook-Off, and a visit from Garden Jane and her Cirque-deSoleil-style theatrical group with a garden spin called Cirque D'irt. The farmers' market aims to be a zero-waste zone and we have a plastic-free policy. So look for blue recycle bins and green carts for food waste. Remember to bring your coolers and shopping bags and cups for drinks. We encourage you to leave the car at home and ride your bike or take the 17 Kerr/Eastlake bus. We'll see you there. And don't forget to enter the draw to win a giant gift basketful of farm fresh produce and delicacies donated by vendors.
