www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 27, 2008 - 21 Public school board set to repair parking lots By Tim Whitnell SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER A half-dozen Burlington schools are among a number of Halton District School Board sites that have already received or will get significant repairs to their asphalt surfaces as part of a $300,000 plan to fill in numerous potholes and cracks. Facilities superintendent Gerry Cullen told trustees at last week's school board meeting that a harsher than normal winter made a mess of many schools' paved parking lots and playgrounds. "These are the priorities for the system," Cullen said of a list of 61 sites, mostly elementary and high schools, which will receive or have already received attention to their crumbling or damaged blacktop. The estimated repair cost for each school ranges from $1,000 to $30,000. "We have significant, deep holes. We will carry these (repairs) out as quickly as we can. I actually saw a situation where a car was in a puddle above the bottom of the doors." Seven sites are expected to need $10,000 or more in repairs with Burlington accounting for six of them. Dr. Charles Best P.S. leads the way at $30,000 with the playground cited for work along with the Junior Kindergarten play area. Among the 17 Burlington sites cited, those requiring $10,000 or more in repairs are: New Street Education Centre parking lot ($25,000); M.M. Robinson H.S. and Brant Hills P.S. parking lots ($20,000 each); Ryerson P.S. playground and pathway ($13,000); and the J.W. Singleton Education Centre parking lot ($10,000). The only non-Burlington site with at least an estimated $10,000 worth of repair work needed is the White Oaks Secondary School south campus in Oakville. Oakville trustee Philippa Ellis expressed shock when she saw Robert Bateman H.S. in southeast Burlington was slated to receive $1,000 in repairs, remarking on the condition of its parking lot. Cullen told trustees that an independent traffic consultant recently conducted a comprehensive study of the Bateman lot, includONE DAY ONLY - AUCTION SALE DIRECT FACTORY AUTHORIZED LIQUIDATION - ALL ITEMS MUST BE SOLD Acting under Instructions received: we will sell: brand new furniture & accents*new home furnishings *bedroom suites*living room sets *dining tables & chairs *hand carved mahogany designer's accents *estate jewellery * lcd - plasma tvs *sports memorabilia* leather sofas- estate coins - framed art- mattress & box spring sets ing vehicular and bus traffic in and out of the composite high school, with a course of action still to be determined. The lot has been plagued by multiple potholes and also requires more parking spaces. The $297,000 in parking lot and playground repairs at the 61 school board sites are being paid for in part through $97,000 in the board's facility renewal fund. The remaining $200,000 was held back from $1.1 million in proposed extra expenditures for various school equipment, which was voted on by trustees at the May 21 board meeting. Cullen had asked trustees at that meeting to okay $200,000 in spending to repair and expand the parking lot at the New Street Education Centre. The centre, which includes Gary Allan H.S., now has more board staff working there than at the longtime central board office at the Singleton centre. Trustees left the expensive repair of the New Street centre lot off the expenditures list at that time, citing pressing parking lot and playground surface needs at other schools.
