Car-hopping, slang amongst teenagers for the act of stealing from unlocked cars, has been a problem throughout Halton in recent weeks. Police have reported numerous incidents taking place in all corners of the region. Police said around 1 a.m. on Sunday, June 22 a Ridge Drive resident spotted a young male inside his wife's car, which was parked in the driveway. The man called police and the youth was apprehended. Police said the boy had a stolen cell phone in his possession at the time of his arrest. The phone was taken from another car on the street. A 16-year-old Oakville youth is facing several criminal charges including one count of theft under $5,000. He will appear in court on July 31. In a separate incident on Tuesday, June 24 at 2:36 a.m., a Pinecliff Drive resident heard a car alarm go off and looked outside to see two young men near the car acting suspiciously. The resident called police who found the suspects on a nearby street. After a short investigation, the two young men were arrested. A search of the suspects turned up a number of valuables reported stolen from nearby cars, including cellular phones and Ipods. A 16-year-old Oakville male and a 15-year-old Oakville male have been charged with possession of stolen property and will appear in court on July 24. Halton police are reminding residents that thefts of this nature can be prevented by locking car doors, removing valuables from cars, locking valuables in the trunk or keeping them otherwise out of site or parking vehicles in a garage overnight if available. Police also want to emphasis to teenagers and their parents that car-hopping is a criminal offence and if arrested the consequences may include being charged criminally, as well as being photographed and fingerprinted. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate these incidents.
