SPORTSBRIEFS The local kayaker won the men's singles 500metre race at a World Cup competition in Poland last weekend, his fifth World Cup victory of the season and 21st of his career. Van Koeverden posted a time of 1:35.630. Tim Brabants of Great Britain was second in 1:35.870, while Australia's Kenneth Wallace placed third with a time of 1:36.088. Adam van Koeverden Van Koeverden won gold in the K-1 500 and added bronze in the K-1 1,000 at the 2004 Games in Athens. Two other Oakville paddlers had finalist showings at the meet. Cory Rublee was eighth in the men's canoeing singles 200m, while Paul Bryant teamed with Quebec resident Pierre-Luc Laliberte to finish ninth in the C-2 200. ceded safety. Javelin thrower sets age group record Athletiques International's Ana Maria Neilson set a Canadian record for her age division at a track-and-field meet Sunday at York University. The 45-year-old hurled the javelin 32.84 metres, setting a new national standard for women age 45-49. The record-breaking throw came on her final attempt. Making the achievement all the more special for Neilson is the fact she suffered an elbow injury less than a year ago and was unable to compete for the bulk of the 2007 season. In a different age group and on the track, Colleen Hennessy won the 17-and-under girls' 3,000-metre race Saturday. Her time of 9:50.40 could easily find its way to the national rankings list and also help her earn a quick selection to the District D team for the provincial Legion meet in Kitchener later this month. Earlier in the day, Hennessy was third in the 1,500m. Athletiques teammate Melissa Gabel also won gold and bronze on the track. She was victorious in the 15-and-under girls' 1,500m race, adding a third-place outing in the 800m. Athletiques members will be back in action this weekend in Mississauga, as the 14-and-under members take to the track. Longhorns grounded by Tri-City Outgained 205 yards to 52 on the ground and 427-148 overall, the Oakville Longhorns fell 27-8 to the Tri-City Outlaws in Northern Football Conference action Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field. The lone Oakville touchdown came on a 25yard pass from Josh Spanik to Demetrius Woddard in the second quarter. Spanik struggled otherwise, however, completing 10 of 22 passes and being intercepted four times. PHOTO CONTEST WINNER The Oakville Renegades girls' under-14 B soccer team won a tournament in Darlington recently. Renegades stingy in Darlington Anchored by a nearly-impenetrable defence, the Oakville Renegades girls' under-14 B soccer team won gold at a recent tournament in Darlington. Oakville allowed only one goal in its five games, and that marker came on a penalty kick. Sarah Eckert earned shutouts in the other four contests, and stopped each of the shots she faced in a 2-1 shootout victory over Darlington in the semifinal. Renegades captain Meaghan Perrotta scored both Oakville's goals in the championship game, a 2-0 win over the Cataraqui Clippers. Kate Wickham had the Renegades' regulation time marker in the semi, with Caitlin Hammill and Victoria MacNeill scoring in the shootout. In the preliminary round, Oakville tied Cataraqui 0-0 and defeated the Woodbridge Strikers and Oshawa Kicks by 1-0 scores.
