On Saturday, April 26 several hundred people attended the VIP Grand Opening party for the new Burloak Kelsey's restaurant, all in aid of the Canadian Angelman Syndrome Society (CASS). CASS is the national charity that provides a support network for families learning to cope with Angelman Syndrome -- a genetic disorder caused by an abnormality of the 15th chromosome. The condition causes a significant physical and cognitive developmental delay which is very severe making independent life impossible. Angelman syndrome is not well known due to two main factors: (1) the syndrome is a new genetically diagnosed syndrome and (2) the low occurrence rate. CASS is a very small charity that receives minimal funding, but serves many families across Canada. "We are excited about the opportunity to work together as one strong and viable Red Cross in Halton," said Council President Pat Gaudet.
