26 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 12, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Hurricanes player standing out against older opposition Veronica Bosco named MVP as under-13 Oakville team wins Robbie International title By Adam Johnston SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Pint-sized Veronica Bosco may conjure up images of basketball guard Damon Stoudamire, baseball shortstop David Eckstein or gymnast Kerri Strug; all smaller-sized athletes who have excelled in their respective sports. Such is the case with Bosco, whose overcoming-the-odds story is still in its early stages, but nevertheless is very impressive. The 11-yearold, four-foot-tall Bosco is a striker Veronica Bosco for the Oakville Hurricanes girls' under-13 soccer team. She is not only playing on a talented club -- last year's edition won the Ontario Cup -- where the majority of girls are older than her, but she is standing out in the crowd. "She's extremely gifted for her age. She's two years younger than most of the girls on the team," said Hurricanes coach Katie Bond. "She's probably one of the strongest players on the team; she's just naturally gifted." Bosco's talent is not going unrecog- nized, either. She is already training in the under13 regional program, and is currently being scouted for the under-14 provincial team. Additionally, she was featured on a Toronto-area television station as its athlete-of-the-week recently, after earning MVP honours as her team captured gold at the prestigious Robbie International Soccer Tournament. Bosco's undersized physique matches her pocket-sized ego and calm personality. "She's quiet. She's not a (vocal) leader at all," said Bond. However, in contrast, Bosco's pinball-style play and tall aspirations are boisterous. "I want to play for Team Canada," said Bosco, matter-of-factly, when asked about her future soccer goals. "If I keep doing what I'm doing, then yeah." She doesn't think her teammates treat her any differently because of her youth. "Everyone is pretty nice. I kind of fit in with everyone; they make me feel like I'm as old as them," said Bosco. Bosco's talent has helped fuel her team's success. In addition to the Robbie tournament, the Hurricanes won gold at tournaments in Mississauga and Barrie earlier this season. The Hurricanes hold a record of 4-0-1 and ROBBIE CHAMPS: The Oakville Hurricanes under-13 girls' team won its division at the Robbie International Soccer Tournament. are ranked second in Ontario, according to the Kickers (Windsor), Lakeshore (Montreal) and the Terra Power rankings released on July 3.
