EMANCIPATION DAY AUGUST 1, 2008 Thank you, Oakville, for being at the forefront of unlocking freedom for thousands of African-Americans who escaped the brutality of slavery and found refuge on your shores. From 1820 to 1865, the Underground Railroad secretly transported fugitive slaves who traveled from the southern United States across the border to freedom in Canada. For many escapees, Oakville harbour represented their first view of Canada and their dream of new-found freedom. Today, at least 12.3 million people are victims of forced labour worldwide. Keep it Clean Wash your GreenCart and Kitchen Catcher with mild detergent as required. The Kitchen Catcher is dishwasher safe. To reduce odour and minimize mess, you can line your Kitchen Catcher and GreenCart with More Blue and Green for a Better Planet Air Monitoring in Halton Halton Region is growing rapidly. That is why as part of our health protection and promotion activities we focus on actions that help us understand and reduce air quality and climate impacts expected to accompany that growth. Our new air monitoring station in Milton Canada's fastest growing Municipality will provide local residents with a better indicator of air quality. This station will measure the air pollutants most strongly linked to negative health effects, support daily health advice to residents and monitor air quality trends over time. Two new portable air monitors will be moved around the Region to provide information about air quality levels in different parts of the Region and in different situations. Halton's air monitoring program will help provide us with the development processes.
