ALL AT A PRICE YOU COULD RELAX ON MAINWAY At seven years old, C.K. Kelly Martin decided to write her first book series and her entire Grade 2 class had the opportunity to read it. Today, 32 years later, Martin continues with her writing endeavors. On Sept. 23, her book, I Know It's Over, published by Random House Inc., will be available at bookstores for the public to read. While Martin has written six other books, I Know It's Over is the first one to be published and has already been nominated for the American Library Association (ALA) Quick Picks 2009 list. The novel talks about the events that unfold after Nick Severson finds out that his exgirlfriend, whom he still loves, is pregnant with his child. "The book is from the guy's point of view," explained Martin. "He (Severson) finds out on Christmas Eve that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant." Martin is able to capture all the different feelings that Severson has throughout the novel by alternating between the present and past. "The first chapter is him finding out that his girlfriend is pregnant, then the book goes back to their past relationship and then the second half of the book goes back to the present with what happens after she tells him she's pregnant." The novel, which has already received a starred review from Kirkus, a book review journal that posts more than 500 pre-publication book reviews on its site (http://www.kirkusreviews.co m/kirkusreviews/index.jsp) every month, is directed towards young adults 14 and up. The York University film studies graduate admits that this is her favourite age group to write about. "I find it the most interesting. Everybody is trying to find themselves when they are young. And you're experiencing all these things for the first time, gaining your independence, falling in love, finding out what you want to do for a living," she explained. Martin currently has two other books lined up for release within the next two years. One Lonely Degree will be released on May 26, 2009 and her other book, The Lighter Side of Life and Death, is slated to come out May 2010 "This is a really good year," said a content Martin. She is currently working on a book about a 15-year-old girl whose brother, a methamphetamine addict, goes missing. I Know It's Over is currently available for pre-order through Chapters, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Borders, Tower Records and the MTV shop. www.oakvillebeaver.com 647-261-5222
