More than 230 women attended the recent Girl's Night Out Comedy event featuring award-winning Canadian comics Debra DiGiovanni and Laurie Elliott at O'Finn's Irish Temper in downtown Oakville. The event was such a sell out that a second show was added to accomodate the overwhelming response. Girls' Night Out raised more than $6,000 for its organizers, Oakville residents Christine Reidy, Victoria Hayes and Deirdre Thomas. The three Oakville women staged the event as a fundraiser since they will be participating in the 60km Weekend to End Breast Cancer Walk benefiting The Campbell Family Institute at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Sept. 5-7. The trio was aiming to raise more than $6,000 for breast cancer research. However the comedy fundraiser raised that amount itself. It puts the trio's total raised since they started fundraising in June to more than $9,500. lampooning male/female relationships. Improperly disposed-of pet waste and droppings from waterfowl can make the water unsafe for swimming as shown by increased amounts of E. coli in the water. To assess water quality, the Halton Region Health Department collects water samples on a weekly basis from June to August from seven beaches. The water samples are sent to the Ontario Public Health Laboratory in Hamilton to be tested for E. coli. The Health Department usually receives results within 24 hours. The beaches tested are: Prospect Park Old Beach in Halton Hills, Kelso Conservation Area near Milton, Coronation Park East and West and Bronte Park Beach in Oakville, and the Beachway North and South in Burlington. The main factors that influence the amount of E. coli include seasonal and storm water run-off, warmer temperatures, algae, and large populations of birds such as geese and gulls. If the tested water sample indicates high levels of bacteria, a sign warning that the beach is unsafe for swimming is posted by the Local Municipality. Warning signs are taken down once test results are within acceptable limits. The beach water quality results are also available over the phone and on the Halton Region website at www.halton.ca. While Halton's beaches are a great place for recreation and leisure activities, swimming or playing in water with unacceptable bacteria levels can result in an increased risk of infection of the eyes, ears, nose and throat. Stomach and intestinal illnesses may also occur if water is swallowed. You can help keep the bacteria levels low in the water: · Don't feed animals or birds and limit the amount of food taken to the beach. · If pets are allowed on the beach, stoop, scoop, and dispose of the waste properly. · Don't use soap in the water; it nourishes algae and bacteria, helping their growth.
