According to a statement made in March by Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan, is that the new facility will have more beds than Oakville's existing hospital and will provide a full range of health services, including acute care, pediatrics, surgical care, mental health programs and complex continuing care. The general timeline for the north Oakville facility is three years to plan and three more to build. Construction is set to begin in 2010 with completion in late 2013. Considering all of the current and future development expected in north Oakville, a centrally located building site has been chosen and secured for the hospital, already. It's 50-acres of land on the northwest corner of Hwy. 5 and Third Line. The ample land space makes it easier to expand and accommodate an expected influx of 55,000 people in north Oakville. Just a year into the construction of the hospital, in 2011, the population of Oakville is expected to grow to 190,000. That's a hike of 25,000 from the current count of 165,600 citizens. The 50 acres is part of the Oakville Land Assembly, an area of 1,095 acres of provincially-owned land bounded by Highway 407 to the north, Dundas Street to the south, Sixteen Mile Creek to the east and Bronte Road to the west. Rob Burton, Mayor for the Town of Oakville, said that the province's contribution of land to the new Oakville hospital "demonstrates its commitment to building the vital infrastructure necessary to the health of the people of Oakville and surrounding areas." Hospitals enhance not only the health of people in their communities but also bolster the overall health of the local economy. According to the recent American Hospital Association report, "Beyond Health Care: The Economic Contribution of Hospitals," the hospital industry supports nearly one out of every 10 jobs. Every dollar a hospital spends on supplies or food, for example, subsequently supports more than two dollars of additional business activity.
