Recently, AMEC completed the interior fit-out of the University Health Network's Toronto Medical Discovery Tower. It's a flexible 400,000 square-foot research facility -- a project that was overseen in Oakville. "It's a point of pride for us," said Ciccone. AMEC began operating in Canada in 1907 in response to the burgeoning power demands of the time. It built the country's first large scale hydroelectric plant in 1911, at Horseshoe Falls, and has since added to its extensive project list including the award winning environmental work on Highway 407, restarting nuclear reactors one and two at the Bruce A Power station and designing the first commercial-scale, biodiesel production plant in Canada for Biox Corporation in Hamilton. AMEC's Oakville location also occupies a dominant position in the design and construction of wind power plants and is currently completing one of the largest installations near Kincardine on the shores of Lake Huron. In addition, 100 dedicated staff are supporting the overflow of work that is a result of the huge boom in the potash industry in Saskatchewan. Over the next five years AMEC is managing the Baffinland Iron Mines Mary River project on Baffin Island, which expects to produce 18 million tonnes of iron ore per year and operate for at least 25 years. Described as a world class, $4 billion project, it is so massive that AMEC will require 300 more staff by next summer to keep up with the demands of this project and it's other projects. Awards by way of accolades also come AMEC's way. Sheridan College is bestowing its Big Picture Award for Business on the company for its demonstrated commitment to the school, while also leading the field in innovation and achievement. The Oakville Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club selected AMEC as the Large Business of the Year for 2007, and AMEC was just selected as Oakville's Employer of the year in the Oakville Beaver's Readers' Selection Awards.
