Hunkered down in the wonderfully appointed cockpit, it is hard to see where the front end begins and the back is worse with a high deck and big wing spoiler. This is a car where you make all three mirrors your friends. As for the styling, Nissan very proudly says it is very Japanese. It is a combination of Origami hard edges and voluptuous curves. This car exudes presence. A colleague of mine described it as `mean looking'. I'd call it angry. It is also much bigger in the flesh than in pictures so you have to gave the Nissan engineers kudos for getting the drag coefficient all the way down to 0.27. The driving position is just about perfect and the seats very supportive, firm, but comfortable. Directly in the driver's forward line of sight is a big tachometer with the speedo being secondary and to the left. A round digital gear display is upper right. I found the speedo a bit too hard to read at a glance. There is also readout of speed as part of the driver info centre but it is small. Given the traffic laws of today, I'd rather know how fast I'm going, not how many revs I'm turning. What you got to love is the monitor on the dashboard. Inspired by video gaming, this multi-function display has an astounding 11 pages of information. You can check tire pressure in real time, steering angle, and my favorite, a moving graphic that charts acceleration, boost pressure and how hard you're pushing the gas pedal. You can record this and play it back. The monitor also includes the navigation, Bluetooth hands-free communication and leading-edge entertainment systems with Music Box hard drive. And for your listening pleasure the 11-speaker Bose sound system includes two giant woofers grafted into the rear centre armrest. And what does all this cost? Mere $81,900, which may sound like a lot, but it's half the price of the similarly powered and equipped Porsche 911 Turbo ($158,300). And that's another reason why so many people are interested. It's actually affordable. Rare, blindingly fast, and, yep, affordable has resulted in the all the build-up for the GT-R being well worth the wait.
