www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 19, 2008 - 7 Not all new schools may need to be LEEDS The Halton District School Board will likely continue to build environmental features into its new schools, even if it doesn't have them certified as `green' schools. The board is currently building Gardiner Public School in Georgetown to silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards as a pilot project. However, Superintendent Gerry Cullen says it may not be necessary to spend between $100,000 and $150,000 seeking LEED certification on future schools. Instead, he said, the board can simply replicate the LEED features -- including energy and water efficiency -- to build additional environmentally-friendly schools. Cullen added that staff is learning from the process underway at the Georgetown school. "Our thought at this point is that we should finish the Gardiner process and see what the certification process looks like," he said.
