www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 10, 2008 - 9 Why should you be elected? As part of its election coverage, The Oakville Beaver has asked each of the candidates in the Halton ridings to respond to a weekly question. For their final question we asked them : Why should you be elected to represent the voters of Halton? Garth Turner -- Liberals The times are uncertain and volatile, and we need people in Ottawa who understand the economy, the markets and our endangered middle class. We also need politicians unafraid to say they represent the people first, and political parties and Garth Turner leaders second. Sadly, we're further out on the edge of trouble than Canadians appreciate, and certainly more at risk than we're being told. There's no protective bubble over this country. It's delusional to believe we will not be living out the drama we've all been watching on CNN. And while we can't much change the events that may take place, we can do one thing. We can prepare. We can keep democracy alive. We can elect men and women who have pledged accountability to the people. We can ensure Parliament does not become the rubber stamp for one man's clouded and questionable judgment. We can make sure if a storm hits, new laws and strong measures will receive full debate, proper consideration and reflect the will of the voters. I know I've been a controversial MP. The prime minister kicked me out for refusing to be just another silent Conservative caucus member. I have made choices I thought Lisa Raitt -- Conservatives People in Halton are worried about how the US economic crisis will affect us, our jobs and our families. I'm hearing that at people's doors, and at their kitchen tables. I'm also hearing that people are reassured by Stephen Harper's calm, smart leadership of Canada's Lisa Raitt economy. It's one of the reasons I chose to join the Conservative team, and ask for your vote. Here are the facts about Canada's fundamental economic strength, compared to the rest of the world: · Canada has the world's soundest bank system, according to the World Economic Forum. · Canada will lead the developed world in growth, according to the International Monetary Fund. In other words, Canada's government has been the best in the world at preparing for the U.S. economic strife. Canada can't escape completely from the turmoil in the world economy. People in Halton and elsewhere in Canada are feeling real pain. But Stephen Harper's foresight has protected us from the worst, and positioned us for the best. I'm proud to be part of the Conservative team. Our approach is the right one for the times. No Carbon Tax on everything from heating our homes this winter, to the food Amy Collard -- Green The residents of Halton are concerned about the economy, jobs, health care and infrastructure. Canadians are experiencing economic turbulence for two reasons; first, our economy is still based upon oil, which is rapidly increasing in price and distorting our economy; and Amy Collard second our economy is much too closely tied to the American economy which is in a state of upheaval. The Green Party will remedy this by moving our economy toward safe renewable sources of energy, which will result in the creation of good, sustainable green-collar jobs right here in Halton. We will also invest in the renewal of the manufacturing sector and increase industry-based job training and apprenticeship. The Green Party will provide funding to ensure our hospitals are fully utilized, diagnostic equipment is updated and more doctors and nurses receive training. This is Robert Wagner--NDP Halton deserves better. Residents of Halton deserve a Member of Parliament that will serve them with care and integrity. Halton needs an MP that doesn't play partisan games as this is a waste of time. Halton is the greatest place in Robert Wagner Canada to raise a family. It is the greatest place to live, work, and play. I will work tirelessly to promote Halton as a hub of industry and investment. With the paradigm shifting, now is the time to take the bull by the horns and become a leader in the new economy. There is no reason why Halton cannot be the National and perhaps World-Wide leader in Green Collar Jobs. This election is about who will put you and your family first.
